I created this blog when my sweet little girl, Kristen, was diagnosed with cancer, for the third time. After fighting for almost 3 years Kristen was called home to that same God who gave her life. One of my favorite quotes comes from Neal A. Maxwell- "Those who "plow in hope" not only understand the law of the harvest but they also understand what growing seasons are all about. True, those with genuine hope may see their proximate circumstances shaken like a kaleidoscope at times, yet with the "Eye of faith" they still see divine design." Kristen blessed lives and continues to do so. Her light continues to shine. As for me, I continue to "plow in hope" knowing well that Kristen is mine for eternity. Families can be together forever!

The Calm Before the Storm

Day +4
We know the storm is raging in the not so far distance. The chemo finished almost one week ago.
Soon we will notice the effects.
In the meantime
Kristen is comfortable and even a little bored at times.
We'll take the boring days anytime.
Once engraftment occurs, there is a chance for
another storm of sorts.
Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) can occur at anytime. This can be a serious and life-threatening complication of a bone marrow transplant. This occurs when Kristen's immune system reacts against her brothers bone marrow. Acute GVHD usually occurs during the first 100 days after transplant. Chronic GVHD can occur after the first 100 days.
Medications are already being given to
reduce the risk of this complication.
Once again we are praying that any complications will be minimal.

Praying that she weathers the storm with the greatest of strength and the minimum of difficulty. Kristin is in my thoughts, she keeps reminding me how amazing a young woman she is. She has given us courage and most of all Hope and may she continue to do so.

You guys are AMAZING, Kristen also has such an AMAZING brother- I wanted to ask you- can items be sent to her with a p.o. box? I would love to send her something but was not sure if it would work with a p.o. box_ we continue to pray for her recovery and these crucial days ahead, we pray for her brother as well for him to have strength for his amazing courage and example to the rest of us. Kristen is truly a sweet girl.. Thanks for updating us all ... Keep going Kristen your doing GREAT.

Some of the GVHD symptoms are obvious (red/blotchy itchy skin, thrush, stomach ache, diarrhea, dry eyes) some are not so easily recognized as due to GVHD (low energy level, AST & ALT liver enzyme levels up, numbness in joints). Be on the lookout for new and different feelings. GVHD can effect every organ/tissue in the body.
No GVHD - is not good. (Leukemia most likely to relapse in this case)
Some GVHD - is good (can mean Graft vs Leukemia, GVL, is also going on)
A lot of GVHD - that is bad. (NC)
I pray that the storm will provide just the right amount.
May God Bless you in this storm.

How is your son doing? I don't know what recovery is like for the donors. Do they typically bounce right back? Kristen looks great, even if a little bored. Like what Peter Olsen said, we will be prauing for exactly the right things to happen. Your whole family is such an inspiration.

I will be praying that she gets through this with the least amount of complications. She has proved herself to be the bravest of the braves and I know she will keep fighting. All my thoughts are with her, with you and the rest of your family. Sushmita
